Tomoko Kawai is an artist and photographer based in Berlin, Germany. She has been exploring life and human nature through photography, her own bodily sensations, research on cultural history, geology and ecology, and various artistic activities based on insights gains during these processes. Kawai believes art is an open-ended research process and she interprets all the various creative techniques and media she uses as parts of a discursive approach she initiates to engender insights. Recent exhibitions include Japanese Contemporary photography Vol.15 -Things so Faint but Real (Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, Japan,2019), On the Origin of Springs ( Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin,2018) and Detour (Mori-Ogai-Gedenkstaette Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Berlin, 2018). She was awarded the Second prize of TokyoFrontline Photo award (2013, Japan).
