Tomoko Kawai is a Japanese artist based in Berlin, Germany.
Kawai explores human nature through photographic acts, interdisciplinary activities, and fieldwork in urban and natural environments. She completed her study at Academy of Art University in San Francisco, USA. Grant recipient, Japanese Government Overseas Research Program for Artists (Agency for Cultural Affairs, Berlin, 2016-17). Recent exhibitions include Tallinn Photomonth Contemporary Art Biennial (Kai Art Center, Tallinn, 2021), Japanese Contemporary photography Vol.15 (Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, Tokyo, 2019), On the Origin of Springs ( Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, 2018), and Detour (Mori-Ogai-Gedenkstaette, Humboldt University of Berlin, Berlin, 2018). She was awarded the second prize of TOKYO Frontline Photo Award (Tokyo, 2013). She was selected for an artist-in-residence program at MuseumsQuartier Wien (Vienna, 2019), Japan-Finnish artist exchange program (The Finnish Institute in Japan, Helsinki, 2019), and International Studio Program (Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, 2017-18). Her latest book, Intimacy of Paradise, published by Verlag für moderne Kunst, Vienna, has been awarded the German Photo Book Prize 2021 in silver (Deutscher Fotobuchpreis, Germany, 2021).
