
Tomoko Kawai is a Japanese artist based in Berlin. Kawai explores human nature through photographic acts, interdisciplinary activities, and fieldwork in urban and natural environments. She traces the invisible structure in society and the laws of nature through an ecological perspective and physical approach, seeking a new role for humankind as members of the natural world.
Tomoko Kawai graduated from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Grant recipient, Japanese Government Overseas Research Program for Artists (Agency for Cultural Affairs, Berlin, 2016-2017). Recent exhibitions include Baroque / of the Forest (Forest – Folk Museum, Japan, 2023), Foto Tallinn (Kai Art Center, Estonia, 2021), Japanese Contemporary Photography Vol.15 (Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, Tokyo, 2019), and On the Origin of Springs ( Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, 2018). She was selected for an artist-in-residence program ( MuseumsQuartier Wien, Vienna, 2019), a Japan-Finnish artist exchange program (Youkobo art space/Finnish Institute in Japan, Espoo, 2018), and International Studio Program (Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, 2017-2018). Her latest book, Intimacy of Paradise, published by Verlag für moderne Kunst, received silver in the German Photo Book Prize 2021 /2022 (Deutscher Fotobuchpreis, Germany).
